5 Things to Keep in Mind During a Bathroom Remodel

A bathroom remodel can be expensive. In fact, it's the second most expensive remodel you can take on behind your kitchen. However, when a bathroom is remodeled well, it can easily pay for itself.  I have some easy and inexpensive updates that you can make during your bathroom remodel that will give you the luxury you are looking for and the timeless design that will give you the return on your investment you need.

Make a Plan

You need a functional space when it comes to a bathroom, so make sure you are planning ahead. Swapping out one toilet or vanity for another sounds easy enough, but you need to consider the various heights and sizes of the fixtures you are selecting for your space.

It's always most cost-effective to stick with the current footprint of your space. It's also a good idea to stick with the same size fixtures so that they can attach to the current plumbing {if that doesn't need an update} and water source.

Trust the Pros

I'm all about a good DIY project and saving money by putting in your own sweat equity when you can, however, there are some projects that you should leave to the pros. Sometimes having them do the work isn't that much more expensive than doing it on your own and you don't want to be down a functional bathroom for too long. I promise you.

You also want to make sure you have proper installation during your remodel. The stakes are high! Water can seep into incorrectly installed flooring or tile and cause issues like mold and rot.
Check out this list for DIY bathroom remodel mistakes and how to avoid them.

Stick with a Timeless Design

Design trends come and go, and it's easy to get caught up in the latest trends. However, in order to get the most return on your investment, stick with a timeless neutral design. Remember those pink sinks from the 60's or those black toilets from the '90s? If you love color, stick with an accent color in your towels or accessories.

Consider Your Materials

Bathrooms work hard and need to be durable to hold up to a lot of use. The surfaces are wet often and if you have a tub or shower you will have a lot of moisture. While you may love the look of hardwood floors, they aren't a good choice for a bathroom. Consider faux wood tile instead.

You also want to select materials that are low-maintenance. Try to steer clean of hard-to-clean grout and temperamental stone and wood surfaces.

Take Advantage of the Small Space

Most bathrooms don't have a lot of square footage, which means you can usually select some high-end finishes and still stay on budget. We installed heated flooring in our bathroom remodel and were surprised at how affordable it was in our small space. Do the math and calculate the cost, you may be able to afford more than you thought if you are working with a small space.

Great post! I agree that materials are very important in bathrooms - there is so much moisture that something laminate, wood, or just in general not well made will start to show wear quickly!

These are great tips! We have remodeled a couple of bathrooms through the years, and it is so important to do it right. Like you said, you don't want water seeping into places it shouldn't be. It is also a good idea to go with timeless. This way you don't have to keep updating if you happen to stay in the same house for decades.

We are hoping to add another bathroom to our home in the near future. These are great tips. I live in an older home, almost 100 years old, so we have seen the benefit of timeless designs.
