I sent my oldest son off to school for his junior year this morning. He's 2,500 miles away from home living in a different state far away from the comfortable safety and four walls we have provided for him as a soft place to land these past twenty years. There are a few things that I mom-picked {like hand-picked but by mom...it's my blog, I can make up words!} to send with him to make his new apartment feel a little less like a temporary college crap-hole and more like home.

Top Tips to Make Your Child's College Apartment Feel More Like Home

Framed Photographs

Listen. Any who-ha can give their kid a picture, but it takes some thought to put it into a frame. Plus, nothing says cheap and temporary like a taped-up picture on the wall. A framed photograph just feels homey and it's a great way for your college kid to personalize their space.

Put a family picture or two in a frame {don't go all crazy-nothing too big and not too many} and slip that into your college kid’s bag with a little note about what they mean to your family or how much you will miss them. Bonus points if you give them a blank frame with a space open for a special memory they create in the coming school year.

Area Rug

Most temporary housing like dorm rooms and college apartments have cold tile or maybe wood floors. They are easy to clean, but they are also kind of cold and sterile. Not only will an area rug add warmth, it will make your college kid feel a little more at ease and want to kick their shoes off and relax in their space.

Bath Towels

Before freshman year had really started, my son realized how very important a good bath towel is. He purchased the most inexpensive towels and every day he barely dried off with those thread bare towels that barely soaked up water. He left the shower damp and quickly realized that a good bath towel matters. Man, being an adult is boring. But as adults, we have all already learned this lesson and our young grasshoppers need to be taught. So...

I picked up Wamsutta® Hygro® Duet Bath towels that are extra absorbent, incredibly soft and get softer and fluffier with every wash because of the proprietary HygroCotton®. They are a great value for the price and they feel a little bit like a hug from mom. Plus, tell your kids the part about the softer and fluffier thing and they just might be inclined to throw their towels in the wash from time to time. You can grab some at Bed Bath & Beyond.

100% Cotton Sheets

Seeing as how most college kids’ beds do double duty as their living room sofa, a good set of sheets can go a long way to making your college apartment feel like home. I love the Better Homes & Gardens® 300 Thread Count sheet set because it's a great value for the price and they are available in a variety of colors. Nothing says home like color coordinated sheets. The sheets are 100% cotton sateen. They are super soft and easy to care for, which is exactly what students need, and you can find them at Walmart.

Mom tip: send a text reminder every so often to your kid to wash their sheets. {You can even sprinkle it in with well-meaning statistics about bed bugs and creepy things that live in their dead skin cells and that may or may not be lurking in their beds.} The thought to wash their sheets will not even cross their minds and if you don't do this, your young adult spawn will not ever wash their sheets the whole entirety of the school year. If you send a reminder, there is hope that the sheets will be washed at least once because that's about how often our beautiful children listen to us. AmIright?

I don't visit my son's college digs very often, but I know when I have, I get great delight from seeing the touches of home sprinkled throughout. It doesn't take much to personalize a space and make it feel a little more like home. What do you send with your college kids to make their temporary homes feel more homey?

Nice sheets are always a good idea! I hadn't thought about a framed photo, but love that idea!

Ok I am always on the hunt for a good, soft towel myself that lasts - will have to check these out! We are picky about towels!
