Best Area to Stay in Charleston, South Carolina
If you're planning a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, you're probably dreaming of cobblestone streets, historic buildings, trees dripping with Spanish moss, and food that feels like a warm hug. Charleston is a city that knows how to charm, and after nearly thirty years since my last visit, I was ready to book a few day stay but wasn't quite sure where the best place to stay would be. I did a lot of research and after our two night stay, I'm here to say that I think I found the best location to base your Charleston adventures.
Whether you're visiting for a romantic getaway, a little solo adventure, or a family trip filled with history and Lowcountry cuisine, this area is the best place to stay to make the most of your time in this picture-perfect Southern city.
Best Area to Stay in Charleston, South Carolina
The Perfect Location
There are several neighborhoods in Charleston that could tempt you to stay, but none of them offers the charm and convenience of the French Quarter. Nestled between the bustling Historic District and the Charleston Harbor, this area feels like a postcard that's come to life.
The French Quarter is quiet enough to offer a peaceful stay, yet it's right in the middle of everything you'll want to do. We stayed at The Vendue, Downtown Art Hotel. You are literally steps away from Waterfront Park, the famous Pineapple Fountain, and Charleston's picturesque pastel houses.
What makes the French Quarter truly special is that it feels both lived in and timeless. You not only have art galleries lining the cobblestone streets, you've also got horse-drawn carriages clattering by and gas lanterns flickering 24/7. Staying here means that you get to enjoy the charm of Charleston around the clock, and not just during sightseeing hours!
Hotels in the French Quarter
These are a few of the hotels in the French Quarter and Historic District that would all be very walkable around the city. They got high marks and that I heard good things about from other visitors during our trip.
The Mills House {has an outdoor swimming pool!}The Palmetto Hotel {great location, high style!}The Vendue {boutique hotel with art collection}Hotel Emeline {free bikes!}20 South Battery {Antebellum style home that's been converted to a hotel}
The Vendue: More Than Just a Hotel
Charleston has no shortage of charming inns and luxury boutique hotels, but The Vendue offers something different. It's often referred to as Charleston's art hotel because it blends historic architecture with modern art and unexpected creativity. It's housed in a series of restored warehouses dating back to the 18th century, and each room feels unique. There are no cookie cutter hotel vibes here!
Art is a central theme, with other 300 pieces displayed throughout the hotel and a full-time art director curating rotating exhibits. In fact, we saw new art pieces going up while we were there! Even if you aren't typically an art lover, you'll find yourself pausing to admire what's on the walls. It's honestly a fun whimsical vibe, not a stuffy art show vibe.
Pro Tip: I had initially booked the cheapest room. It was an interior room. About two weeks before our trip, I got a text asking if we'd like to upgrade for a much lower rate. If you want to roll the dice and try this method, I'd recommend it. You'll save some money on your total bill. But if this stresses you out, book what you want right out of the gate!
The Perks {Why We Chose The Vendue Hotel}
I love a good hotel that has stand out and thoughtful amenities. Here's what makes The Vendue stand out.
Free bike rentals: While Charleston may not be the most bike-friendly city, there are part of it that are incredibly bikeable and being able to explore on two wheels is one of the best ways to take in the neighborhoods, waterfront, and hidden alleyways. The Vendue offers complimentary bike rentals to guests which is a major plus if you want to cover more ground without renting a car or taking a ride share everywhere!
Rooftop bar: The Vendue's rooftop bar is consistently rated as one of the best in the city. You can come for sunset views over the harbor, and stay for handcrafted cocktails and live music. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
French breakfast: While I love a good breakfast, this one is a bit more bare bones, but provides just enough to get you moving for the day. It's a French style breakfast delivered to your door every morning and has several pastries and some fresh fruit.
Two buildings: There are two different hotel buildings, The Vendue and across the street The Enclave. Initially I booked at The Vendue but we were upgraded to The Enclave. This came with in-room treats delivered and afternoon snacks not to mention the ability to explore both hotel spaces.
Evening milk and cookies: There's something about capping off the evening with milk and cookies!
Explore Charleston on Foot {or bike!}
One of the best things about staying at The Vendue is that you can walk just about anywhere! The Historic District is right outside your door, with dozens of must see spots all within a 10 minute stroll. Don't forget about borrowing the bikes! In the residential area, this is one of the best ways to see everything without totally wearing yourself out!
Charleston Water Taxi: Leaving from Waterfront Park, you can easily hop on the water taxi for a totally different perspective of the city. You might even see dolphins!
Pro tip: The bikes are allowed on the water taxi! The water taxi is a great way to get around Charleston and see the area. It's $17 for an all day hop on hop off pass {free for kids 3 and under}.
Photowalk Charleston: I literally stumbled on this while scrolling things to do on social media and I'm so glad that I did. You get a 1-hour historic downtown walking tour with a local guide who also happens to be a photographer. Along the way, you stop for photos, which end up being the best souvenir you can get the whole trip!
Pro tip: Book this on the first day of your trip so you can make notes of the things you want to see and get recommendations on things to do and places to eat while you are in town!
Rainbow Row: These iconic pastel-colored homes are Instagram favorites, and they are just a few blocks away.
The Battery and White Point Garden: This is a great one to borrow the bikes for. You can walk {or bike} along the southern tip of the peninsula for sweeping views of the harbor and grand antebellum mansions.
Tradd Street: This street is overflowing with historic homes and has placards that allow you to read about the history of the homes on this street. It is a residential area making it a lot less busy with traffic so it's also perfect for bike riding!
King Street: Known for its shopping, this area is home to everything from indie boutiques to high-end designers.
Charleston City Market: Browse local crafts, art, and snacks in this historic market that's been in operation since the 1800's. Keep an eye out for special events and live music.
Pineapple Fountain: This fountain is an iconic symbol of Charleston. It also offers a really refreshing dip {yes, you can wade in it!} to cool off from a hot walk around the city.
Carriage Tours: I've taken a carriage tour every time I've been in the city and I enjoy it every time! Every tour is just a little bit different but they are all rooted in history and provide a really unique way to learn about the city. I don't get any kick back, but I have only ever taken Old South Carriage Tours since I used to visit in the early 90's! They are worth booking through!
Pin this for later:
Charleston has a way of making you feel like you've stepped back in time without sacrificing modern comforts! I was really happy with the location that we chose and I'd highly recommend the area, and The Vendue as the jumping off point for your next vacation.
