Landing at Dublin Airport for the first time can feel a bit overwhelming. It's a bit of a journey from the airport to the downtown area where most people are going to want to stay. But friends, even if you are renting a car later in your trip, now is not the time to rent one! I promise you, you don't want to be driving downtown Dublin! You are likely arriving a little excited, a little jet-lagged, and you are wanting to get your trip started. You may not be spending a lot of time in the city, so you want to make the most of it. Don't pay for an expensive taxi or ride share. I'm telling you one of the easiest {and cheapest} ways to get into the Dublin city center. I've done this myself multiple times and I have all the tips. You might just be visiting Ireland on a short stopover or beginning a longer trip, regardless, Dublin Express offers a comfortable, reliable, and a very traveler-friendly way to start your time in Ireland.
Why Dublin Express is One of the Best Options from Dublin Airport
Dublin Express is a private coach service that runs directly between Dublin Airport and multiple central locations throughout Dublin city. Unlike standard city buses, these coaches are designed with travelers in mind, which means comfortable seating, space for luggage, and fewer stops along the way.
What really sets Dublin Express apart is speed. Thanks to the Dublin Port Tunnel and limited stops, the journey into the city can take as little as 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and which stop you choose. Cars and taxis can't go through the Dublin Port Tunnel {it's reserved for buses that have 25+ seats} so it's a faster alternative. After a long flight, you are going to want to get your trip started!
Booking is also refreshingly straightforward, and entirely forgiving. Tickets are easy to book online, buses run frequently throughout the day, and the stops are located at many of Dublin's most popular neighborhoods and attractions. For travelers who want to hit the ground running, or simply want the least stressful option, this is hard to beat!
Pro tip: Because there are not as many frequent stops, you may have to walk a bit to your hotel. Pack light! It will make everything easier on you!
Where Dublin Express Goes in the City
Dublin Express operates two main routes, both of which stop at Dublin Airport terminals before heading into the city. the routes serve slightly different parts of Dublin, but both are useful depending on where you are staying.
One route focuses heavily on the heart of the city, stopping near places like Temple Bar, O'Connell Street, Trinity College, and the River Liffey. These stops are ideal if you plan to explore Dublin mostly on foot or if you're staying in the historic core of the city.
The other route continues toward the south side and docklands area, stopping hear Trinity College, Merrion Square, Pearse Station, and the Harcourt Street area. This is a great option if your hotel is closer to the Georgian districts or if you're connecting to the Luas tram system.
The nice thing is, you don't have to memorize this all in advance. When you book your ticket, you'll see the route clearly laid out, and once you arrive at the airport, signage makes it easy to find the correct bus.
Pro tip: I've ridden this bus 4 different times in the last few years and every single time, it's been very easy to navigate. The staff at the airport is plentiful and VERY helpful, and will point you in the right direction.
If you are arriving from the US, you'll likely be coming into Terminal 2. Don't stress out if you book the wrong terminal! The terminals are small, and connected by a skybridge so it's easy to walk from one to the other!
How to Book Dublin Express Tickets {and Why You Should!}
While you can buy a ticket when you board the bus, it's almost always better to reserve your Dublin Express ticket ahead of time. Booking online is simple and usually cheaper, and it guarantees that you'll have a seat when you arrive. And it will save you a few euros you can use on a pint of Guinness later!
To reserve your ticket, head to the Dublin Express website and select your direction of travel, date, and approximate time. Buses run frequently, so you don't need to stress about picking the exact minute your flight lands. Tickets are typically flexible within a generous time window, which is especially helpful if immigration lines are long or baggage claim takes longer than expected.
Once you book, you'll receive a digital ticket that can be shown on your phone when you board. There's no need to print anything, which makes this a great option if you're trying to travel light.
Pro tip: you can pre-book the same day and still save money! On one particular trip, we were ending our self-driving trip around the island and when we were about an hour away from the car rental drop off, I booked our tickets so I had a better idea of what time we were going to need.
If you are returning a car and then headed into the city to explore {via Dublin Express} take into account that you will need to take a shuttle from the rental car return, and add about 15 minutes into your schedule.
What I Wish I Packed on My Trip to Ireland
Taking Dublin Express from the Airport: What to Expect
After you land at the Dublin Airport and clear immigration, simply follow the signs toward ground transportation and buses. Dublin Airport is very well organized, and Dublin Express stops are clearly marked outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Once you reach the bus area, look for the Dublin Express branding and confirm whether your bus is serving the route closest to your accommodation. If you're unsure, staff members are usually nearby and happy to help.
Boarding is easy. Show you digital ticket to the driver, stow your luggage, and settle in. The coaches are comfortable, and the ride into the city gives you your first glimpse of Ireland beyond the airport.
Pro tip: In my experience, they aren't sticklers for the time you book. If there is space available, you have a seat on the coach. And they have always had extra room on the coach. So don't stress about waiting or getting the correct bus time right. Just hop on!
Why Dublin Express Works Especially Well for Stopovers
If you're visiting Dublin for just a day or two, every hour counts. Dublin Express removes much of the friction that comes with airport transfers, allowing you to maximize your limited time.
Instead of navigating unfamiliar public transport or waiting in taxi queues, you're quickly on your way into the city. Pair that with a walkable itinerary {I find Dublin to be very walkable!}, and it's entirely possible to experience Dublin's highlights without feeling rushed.

A Few Practical Tips Before You Go
It's worth allowing a bit of buffer time when booking your return journey to the airport, especially during peak travel hours. While Dublin Express is reliable, traffic and airport security lines can still affect timing.
Know that sometimes your drop off spot isn't going to be the same as your pick up spot. This happened to us on our first trip in the city, but we were well aware of it, and it was actually much easier than we expected.
Traveling with smaller luggage will make boarding and exiting the coach much easier. Especially if you have to walk to get to your hotel. We enjoy staying around St. Stephens Green area, and often have at least a 10 minute walk after our stop.
Tickets are designed for specific times, but the tickets allow a 12-hour window on either side of the scheduled, pre-booked time, so even if a flight is delayed, you should be safe!
Round trip tickets are cheaper, so make sure you plan ahead and book for your return back.
Expect to pay around 9 euros for one way, and around 14 euros for round trip.
As always in Ireland, pack layers. Weather can change quickly, and even a short walk from the bust stop to your hotel is more pleasant when you are prepared!
