These are so much fun to make and they make great gifts too! Here is everything you need to know to make your own hot cocoa bombs. This one comes with a little turtle {caramel and walnut YUM!} twist.

What is a hot chocolate bomb?

hot chocolate bomb

The weather changes and hot cocoa is one of the best ways to get cozy in those winter months. Thanks to a whole lot of boredom as of late, this new hot cocoa trend is taking over TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, which is why it's probably so popular with the young kids!

At it's most basic, a hot cocoa bomb is simply a chocolate-filled sphere filled with a mix of hot cocoa powder. There are plenty of variations {keep reading for more ideas} including this turtle variation I'll be sharing today.

To watch the magic, simply put the hot chocolate bomb at the bottom of your coffee mug and pour hot milk over top and watch it melt, open, and explode with flavor. Of course, you can use water, but everyone knows hot chocolate is better with real milk!

It's fun to watch the inside of the hot cocoa bomb come to life revealing whatever it is you made and put inside from mini marshmallows to caramel drizzle to chopped nuts or even more chocolate!

Are hot chocolate bombs easy to make?

Yes! If you've never made chocolate candy before, there might be a bit of a learning curve, but the good thing about chocolate is that it melts and then can be melted again so it's forgiving.

HOT CHOCOLATE BOMB HOW TO MAKE

How to make hot chocolate bombs

The best hot chocolate bombs are made with high-quality ingredients. I know in the recipe I mention using hot chocolate mix. You can use hot cocoa mix you buy at the store, but I find that whipping up your own hot cocoa mix isn't that hard! I usually use the recipe on the back of the cocoa box and then store it in an airtight container.

You will also want to use high-quality chocolate. The chocolate melted discs are fine and are probably the best thing to try the first few times you make these, but after you are a pro {you'll get there!} using a chocolate bar with 65% cocoa or more will be your best bet. You also want to look for chocolate that contains cocoa butter. That way you will get the best melt and the tastiest cup of hot chocolate you've ever had!

You will also need bath bomb molds or cake pop molds and, if using bath bomb molds, I found it best to hold them steady in a cupcake tin.

Expert tip: Wear gloves to limit the fingerprints that you leave behind as you handle the chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Chocolate Candy Melts {make sure it contains cocoa butter}
  • 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix {I prefer to make my own mix, I love the recipe on the back of the box of cocoa}

Instructions

  1. Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
  2. Place 1 tbsp melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. You could even use a paintbrush for this step. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
  3. Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
  5. Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tbsp hot chocolate mix, 1 walnut, 1 tbsp caramel sauce, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
  6. Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
  7. Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
  8. Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
  9. Using a piping bag or a fork, place a tsp of the remaining chocolate candy melts on top of the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by placing an additional walnut on this chocolate dab, then drizzle additional caramel sauce over them.
  10. Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
  11. To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups of hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
