How to Resell Home Items on Facebook Marketplace to Make Money for a Move. No Garage Sale Needed!

Moving is expensive. Between packing supplies {remember the days you could ask for boxes at the local stores?}, truck rentals, deposits, cleaners, and all the little costs that sneak up on you, it can feel like your bank account is draining before you even load the first box. But if you're preparing for a move, you're also sitting on one of the best opportunities to make extra money...the stuff in your house!

We've all heard how important it is to declutter and honestly, who wants to move stuff they don't love anyway? You might as well take this time to purge all the things and start fresh in your new space.

One of the smartest things we did before moving was start selling items around our home on Facebook Marketplace. Not only did it help us declutter before packing, but it also helped cover moving expenses in a meaningful way. And unlike a traditional garage sale where people expect everything to cost next to nothing {guilty!}, Facebook Marketplace gives you the chance to get real value for your higher-end items.

If you're getting ready for a move and wondering how to make extra money without taking on another job {because no one has time for that!}, reselling your home items can make a huge difference. Here's how I did it and some things I learned as a reseller that could help you.

MAKE MONEY FOR YOUR MOVE RESELLING UNWANTED ITEMS ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE TIPS TO MAXAMIZE YOUR PROFITS WITHOUT HAVING A GARAGE SALE

Why Facebook Marketplace is Better Than a Garage Sale

I love going to garage sales, but maybe you'd be surprised to know that I don't necessarily like having garage sales. It's a lot of work to do them well, and honestly, while you'll be getting rid of stuff, you'll be adding up those quarters slowly to make any real dent. The money just isn't usually there for me especially when I'm busy with moving.

Garage sales have their place and they really are great for clearing out lots of low value items quickly. But if you're trying to maximize profits {and use your time well} before a move, Facebook Marketplace is usually the better option.

At a garage sale, people expect bargain basement pricing. They want the $800 dresser for $20. They'll haggle over a lamp priced at $5. And at the end of the day, you're left sitting outside just hoping someone will stop by and buy your stuff.

On Facebook Marketplace, buyers are actively searching for specific items. Someone looking for a dining table, sectional couch, power tools, or patio furniture and they are already prepared to spend more money than the average garage sale shopper.

You'll almost always make  more money selling high-value items individually on Marketplace instead of tossing them into a garage sale.

Things that tend to sell especially well include:

  • Furniture
  • Home decor
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Power tools
  • Baby gear
  • Exercise equipment
  • Seasonal decor
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Craft supplies
  • Electronics

And the best part? You don’t have to spend an entire Saturday sitting in your driveway hoping someone buys your stuff.

Decide What's Worth Selling

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to resell items is attempting to sell everything. Not every item is worth the time, effort, messages, and coordination.

I have a personal rule that if I can't make at least a $20 profit on an item, it's probably not worth me trying to sell. I'd rather donate it and move on.

That doesn't mean every item has to sell for $20, but I ask myself whether the time involved is worth the return. Listing, answering questions, coordinating pickup, and meeting buyers all takes effort.

Sometimes it's easier and mentally healthier to let those lower value items go.

This mindset helps prevent burnout during a move because moving already comes with enough stress. You don't' want to spend your evenings trying to sell a $3 vase to someone who may or may not show up.

Focus your energy on:

  • Higher-value items
  • Items in excellent condition
  • Things people commonly search for
  • Name-brand products
  • Large items people often buy secondhand

You’ll make more money with fewer transactions.

Price Items to Sell Quickly

When you’re moving, time matters. You don’t want to still be trying to sell your patio chairs the day the movers arrive.

Pricing items fairly from the start is one of the best ways to move inventory quickly.

Keep in mind the alternative. If you don't have room for it and it won't go in your new home, you'd probably rather make some money than no money when you have to donate it or pay for the dump fee.

A common mistake is pricing items based on emotion instead of market value. Just because you paid $1,200 for a couch eight years ago doesn’t mean it’s still worth hundreds today.

Search Facebook Marketplace for similar items before pricing yours. Look at:

  • Condition
  • Brand
  • Age
  • Demand
  • Similar listings in your area

If you want a fast sale, price competitively.

I’d rather make slightly less money and have something gone quickly than spend weeks I don't have relisting and lowering the price over and over again.

Get it gone!

Take Good Photos

You don’t need professional photography, but clear, clean photos matter.

Take pictures:

  • In natural light
  • From multiple angles
  • With clutter removed
  • Showing any flaws honestly
  • With measurements if helpful

People are far more likely to click on a listing that looks clean and organized.

If possible, stage larger items like furniture so buyers can picture them in their own homes.

And be honest about condition. If there’s a scratch or stain, photograph it. Honest listings help avoid wasted time and frustrated buyers.

Write Descriptions That Answer Questions

A good description saves you from answering the same questions repeatedly.

Include:

  • Dimensions
  • Brand names
  • Condition
  • Age
  • Pickup details
  • Whether it comes from a smoke-free or pet-friendly home

Instead of writing:
“Chair for sale.”

Try:
“Pottery Barn upholstered accent chair in excellent condition. No stains or tears. Smoke-free home. Approximate dimensions included in photos.”

The more information you provide upfront, the easier the transaction usually becomes. You can use Google lens to help get the most detailed information. A lot of times you can find the exact name of an item and that's important because someone has been looking for the Restoration Hardware Riley Bookcase and with a quick search, yours will pop right into their feed.

Pro Tip: If you can, offer delivery. I have a mini van that I use like a truck. If I'm selling furniture items I offer delivery because not everyone has a vehicle for transport. If they have to borrow a brother's truck or rent a truck that's a barrier for them and you'll lose the sale. Offer delivery {for an additional fee of course!} and close the deal.

MAKE MONEY RESELLING BEFORE YOU MOVE

Respond to Every Comment or Question

One of the most important Marketplace tips is simple: respond to people.

Even if someone asks a question that’s already answered in the listing, respond kindly and quickly. The algorithm is a real thing!

Facebook rewards responsive sellers, and buyers are more likely to purchase from someone who communicates well.

If someone comments:
“Is this available?”

Don’t just say:
“Yes.”

Instead, move the conversation forward:
“Yes, it’s available! I’m located on the north side of town near the library. When would you like to pick it up?”

Having a plan matters.

Too many sellers simply answer questions without actually moving toward a sale. Make it easy for buyers to commit.

Don't Just Say It's Available-Make a Plan

One of the biggest time-wasters on Facebook Marketplace is endless messaging with no actual pickup scheduled.

After confirming availability:

  • Suggest pickup times
  • Confirm payment method
  • Clarify location
  • Ask when they can come

People are more likely to follow through when there’s a concrete plan.

For example:
“Yes, it’s still available. I’m available tonight between 5–7 PM or tomorrow morning before 11 AM. Which works best for you?”

This turns a casual inquiry into an actual transaction.

RESELLING HOME ITEMS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

Choose a Safe Meeting Location

Safety matters when meeting strangers for Marketplace sales.

For smaller items, consider meeting:

  • At a police station safe exchange zone
  • In a busy public parking lot
  • At a coffee shop
  • During daylight hours

For large furniture pickups, obviously buyers may need to come to your home. In those cases:

  • Have another person home if possible
  • Keep doors locked
  • Move items near the garage or porch ahead of time
  • Avoid letting strangers wander through your house

Trust your instincts. If someone seems suspicious or communication feels off, move on to another buyer.

Accept Multiple Payment Options

Cash is still common on Marketplace, but many buyers now prefer digital payment options.

Accepting Venmo in addition to cash can make transactions easier and faster.

Just make sure:

  • Payment is confirmed before handing over the item
  • You avoid complicated payment scams
  • You never accept overpayments or unusual requests

Keeping payments simple protects both you and the buyer.

Combine Sales When Possible

One of the smartest things you can do during a move is combine sales.

If someone is buying one item, mention other things you’re selling too.

For example:
“Also selling a matching side table and lamp if you’re interested.”

Or:
“I have several other home decor items listed if you want to take a look while you’re here.”

People already making the drive are often willing to buy additional items.

This is especially helpful when you’re trying to clear out categories of things quickly.

Sell Items in Lots

Not everything needs to be sold individually.

Sometimes bundling items together actually helps things sell faster.

This works especially well for:

  • Craft supplies
  • Kids’ toys
  • Holiday decor
  • Kitchen gadgets
  • Office supplies
  • Books
  • Baby clothes

For example, instead of listing individual scrapbook supplies separately, create:
“Huge craft supply lot with paper, stickers, markers, ribbon, and storage bins.”

People love convenience.

Selling in lots means:

  • Fewer listings
  • Fewer messages
  • Faster pickups
  • Less clutter in your home

And honestly, during a move, simplicity matters.

Use Marketplace as Motivation to Declutter

One unexpected benefit of selling items before a move is that it forces you to evaluate what you actually use and love.

When you start looking around your home through the lens of resale value, you quickly realize how much stuff you no longer need.

Every item sold means:

  • One less thing to pack
  • One less thing to move
  • One less thing to unpack later

And that freedom feels good.

Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load and start fresh.

Use the Money Specifically for Moving Expenses

One thing that helped motivate me was giving the Marketplace money a purpose.

Instead of letting it disappear into everyday spending, we used it specifically for moving-related costs.

That extra money helped cover:

  • Packing supplies
  • Moving trucks
  • Cleaning costs
  • Deposits
  • Gas

Watching those sales add up made the work feel worthwhile.

Even a few hundred extra dollars can relieve stress during a move. And depending on how much you sell, it could easily turn into thousands.

MAKE MONEY RESELLING WHEN MOVING WITHOUT HAVING A GARAGE SALE

Facebook Marketplace can be one of the best tools for making extra money before a move. It allows you to declutter your home, reduce what you need to pack, and offset moving expenses at the same time.

The key is being intentional:

  • Sell higher-value items individually
  • Donate low-value items that aren’t worth the effort
  • Price fairly for quick sales
  • Respond quickly to buyers
  • Make actual pickup plans
  • Prioritize safety
  • Bundle items when it makes sense

Most importantly, remember that your goal isn’t perfection. Your goal is progress.

Every item sold puts money back in your pocket and brings you one step closer to a smoother move.

If you are going to have a garage sale, don't make this mistake!
