DIY Lighted Fall Canvas

There is something special and magical about twinkling lights. It's one of my favorite things about Christmas, but why let that holiday have all the fun? Lights are the perfect addition to an inexpensive canvas that I found while doing my weekly shopping at Walmart where I always walk out with a cart full of things that weren't on my list! If you love inexpensive home decor projects that you can DIY, this lighted canvas is something you can create in about an hour. I've got the full tutorial for you so read on!

You will need:

Canvas {under $10 at Walmart!}
Lights {I found these in the Halloween section}
Batteries {found in the Battery Center by the toy aisle}
Utility knife
Masking tape

I came to Walmart in search of batteries for some non-working remotes and left with all the supplies I needed to complete this DIY lighted canvas sign. I just love it when inspiration strikes and on a budget!

While there are plenty of batteries to choose from in the Walmart Battery Center, I selected the Rayovac brand because they come with a power guarantee to hold power up to 10 years while in storage. Since this canvas sign will only be used seasonally and stored for the rest of the time, I wanted to make sure it would power up when I needed it to.

I placed my batteries into my battery pack so that they would light up and I could see what I was working with.

Count the lights on your string so that you can plan the correct number of holes to make in the canvas for the lights. These are the lights I used.

I made a rough plan of where I wanted to put the lights starting from the top so that once I worked my way down, the heavy battery pack could rest easily behind the canvas at the base and not have to hang at the top. Plan ahead or you will be trying to figure out how to mount the battery pack and you don't want that!

Make a small slice in the canvas from the front. I do this from the front so that you can see where your light will be placed. You can either make a horizontal or vertical cut, either works, just shimmy the bulb into place.

Once the light is placed into the hole in the canvas from the back, place masking tape over the light to secure it. It's not fancy, but it does the trick and you can't see it from the front even though the back is a hot mess!

Once your canvas is completed, you can stand back and admire your work.

I think the lights make the canvas look that much more festive and since the batteries have long lasting power, I can have the lights on from day into night.
