By now, your students are settled into the school year, and homework assignments, projects and papers all come with their own unintentional mistakes. As parents, we want to do what we can to help our children succeed and learn from those mistakes so that when it really counts, kids can perform their best. Common Homework Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

1. Failure to Show Work

Teachers want to make sure students understand the process of how they got to the right {or wrong} answer. Many teachers will give partial credit if a student looks like they made the right attempt but came up short on the answer. Showing their work also gives the teacher a chance to follow the process of where a child went wrong and help them explain how they can arrive at the correct answer.

2. Not Understanding the Directions

Sometimes students get confused about the directions or miss a vital detail in a question. Encouraging your child to ask for help when they don't understand is a great skill to learn.

3. Not Proofreading or Checking Their Work

It's frustrating when careless mistakes are made, especially if the student clearly knows the answer. Sometimes kids don't want to take the time to go back over their work, but proofreading or checking their answers can often help them catch those careless mistakes.

4. Poor Time Management

Saving things for the last-minute can create sloppy finished products. Encourage your child to get an early start on their homework assignments and projects so that they can avoid any rushing that will come from waiting until the last minute.
