Rediscovering Yourself: Wellness Tips for Empty Nesting Women

REDISCOVERING YOURSELF AFTER THE KIDS LEAVE THE HOUSE

Finding Your Identity

Embracing your newfound freedom and rediscovering your personal interests and passions is key to thriving as an empty nester. Here are some strategies to help you reconnect with yourself.

Rediscovering Personal Interests

Reflect on hobbies or interests you may have put aside while raising children. Engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment will help you reconnect with your authentic self.

Check out my post on How to Find a Hobby as an Adult for inspiration!

Building a New Routine

Establishing a new routine that prioritizes self-care is essential. Set aside time each day for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, whether it's reading, practicing yoga, or indulging in creative pursuits. Making self-care a priority will help you maintain a healthy balance in your life.

Trying New Things

Now is the perfect time to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. Take up a new hobby, join a club or group that aligns with your interests, or travel to a place you've always wanted to visit. Embrace the opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

Investing in Relationships

While becoming an empty nester may lead to feelings of loneliness, it's important to remember that you still have meaningful relationships to nurture and invest in. Here are some ways to strengthen your connections with loved ones.

Bonding with Adult Children

Just because your children have left the nest doesn't mean they don't need you. Make an effort to stay involved in their lives by scheduling regular phone calls or visits. You can also plan activities to do together, like cooking classes or hiking trips.

Cultivating Friendships

As we age, it can be harder to make new friends. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. Join local clubs or groups that align with your interests, attend social events, or reach out to old friends and family members with whom you may have lost touch.

It's going to take some intentionality and some effort to reconnect, but it's worth making the time. Be the inviter and don't wait for the invitation!

Nurturing Relationships Outside of Parenthood

While being a parent is a significant role, nurturing relationships beyond your children is important. Here are ways to cultivate meaningful connections.

Cultivating Friendships and Social Connections

Reach out to old friends, join interest-based groups, or volunteer in your community. Building new friendships and connections will enrich your social life and provide a sense of belonging.

Reconnecting with Your Partner

Rediscover your relationship with your partner by planning date nights, taking weekend getaways, or pursuing shared interests. Investing time and effort into your partnership will strengthen your bond and create a fulfilling emotional connection.

Honestly, one of the best things we did this past year as we became empty nesters was that we took a three-week long trip to Africa together. Sure, it was our 25th wedding anniversary trip we'd been planning for no less than 15 years, but it was one of the best ways to reconnect again.

Wellness Practices for Self-Care

Prioritizing self-care is essential during the empty nest stage. Here are some wellness practices to incorporate into your daily routine.

Taking Probiotics for Gut Health

Prioritize your well-being by incorporating probiotics into your diet. Probiotics support gut health and contribute to overall physical and mental wellness. If you use code msrachel you'll get 20% off!

Not sure what a probiotic is or why you should care? I wrote a whole blog post on it here!

Get Good Sleep

Mid-life sleep is no joke. I was really struggling for a few years and I was just resigned to think that my sleep would just be terrible. I rarely got a full nights sleep and was often awake in the middle of the night for hours unable to fall asleep again. I tried everything. Melatonin, magnesium, melatonin and magnesium...and I finally discovered Sleepi Gummies.

Seriously, if you even mention you are having sleep problems within a 10 foot radius of me I'll tell you all about Soul Sleepi Gummies. They have been life changing for me. I started sleeping through the night {like really sleeping through the night for 7-8 hours!} and if I woke up, I fell back asleep quickly. Life changing! You can order them here and use code rachelteodoro for 20% off.

Making Water Intake a Priority

Stay hydrated by prioritizing water intake. Proper hydration is vital for maintaining energy levels, supporting healthy digestion, and promoting radiant skin. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. I tried the 4-week water challenge, and it was so helpful!

One thing that helps me drink more water is adding in True Lime or True Grapefruit. They are zero calories and zero sugar, they just add a little flavor to make it delicious!

Meditation and Mindfulness Practices

As you enter the empty nest stage, it's important to tune into your emotions and take care of your mental health. Meditation and mindfulness practices can help you stay present and connected with yourself. Consider trying meditation apps or joining a local class to learn techniques for reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

I actually really enjoy sound baths! It's not something I would have tried if I didn't have a free subscription as part of my fitness app, but I gave it a shot and I like them. So try something new even if you don't think you'll like it. You just never know!

Connecting with Nature

Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature is a great way to improve your mental wellness. Whether it's going for a walk in the park, gardening, or simply sitting outside and taking in the sights and sounds of nature, being surrounded by greenery can have a calming effect on our minds.

Seeking Professional Help

It's important not to neglect your mental health and seek professional help if needed. As empty nesters, we may face unique challenges, such as adjusting to a new lifestyle or dealing with feelings of loneliness and purposelessness. Therapists and counselors can provide valuable guidance and support in navigating these changes.

Tracking Health Stats Using Wearable Devices

Utilize wearable devices such as Apple Watch or fitness trackers to monitor your health stats. Keep track of your steps, heart rate, and sleep patterns to gain insights into your overall well-being. These devices can also remind you to stay active and incorporate exercise into your daily routine. I wear my Apple Watch every day and use its built-in apps to help make sure I’m on track with my fitness and wellness goals.

Incorporating Protein and Exercise

Regular exercise and a protein-rich diet are essential for maintaining strength, flexibility, and overall vitality. Find activities you enjoy, such as yoga, walking, or strength training, and fuel your body with nutritious meals that include lean proteins.

Exercise keeps your body healthy and releases endorphins, which can boost mood and reduce stress. Find an exercise routine that works for you, whether it's going for daily walks, joining a gym, or taking up a new hobby like dancing or yoga.

I don't care what you do to move your body, just move your body! I always tell people that they need to find the thing that works for them and then do that thing!

REDISCOVERING YOURSELF AFTER THE KIDS LEAVE

The empty nest stage is a remarkable opportunity for personal growth and self-care. Embrace this new chapter of your life with excitement and curiosity. Use this time to rediscover yourself, nurture meaningful relationships, and prioritize your well-being. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's essential to living a fulfilling life. Embrace this journey of self-discovery and make your well-being a top priority. The best is yet to come!
