$1 Homemade DIY Face Mask Using Dollar Store Supplies

There has been a lot of uncertainty, and I might also say, a lot of conflicting information as of late. As we start to see the weeks pass, and more doors open up as life starts to resume a new normal, more and more businesses and even airlines are requiring customers to wear a face mask. The supplies are in great demand, the shelves are often more empty than the toilet paper aisle and many people are struggling to find face masks they can wear. I decided to see if I could make a face mask {a no-sew face mask as well as a mask that is sewn} using supplies from the Dollar Tree. I was able to make both for you guessed it, under $1 and I'm sharing how you can make a DIY homemade face mask using Dollar Tree supplies.

DIY Faux Hand-Lettered Holiday Scroll Wall Hanging

I know this isn't a new confession if you are a long-time blog reader, but Christmas music is not my favorite. There are few songs that make the short list of allowable holiday songs, but O Holy Night is one of them. Every year it seems a different line of that song sticks out to me as one to focus on and this year, the line "and the soul felt its worth" is that line I can't shake. What a powerful line! So much so, that I wanted to hang it in my home somewhere. I was shopping at a holiday market and saw some beautiful kraft paper scrolls and knew that I could replicate it quite easily for a fraction of the price using a line that was meaningful to me. So with packaging paper from the dollar store and a few supplies I had on hand, I made a DIY hand-lettered sign minus the hand lettering.

As much as I try, I can't seem to make my writing produce the beautiful script, and I revisited a chalkboard hack I shared with you years ago to create this faux hand-lettered scroll wall hanging. See how I created this large holiday wall hanging for around $1!

DIY Flocked Christmas Tree Using Supplies from the Dollar Store

Being from the midwest I am a fan of a white Christmas. It doesn't happen often around here, but I love it when it does. Couple that with childhood memories of a sweet flocked Christmas tree that was deemed "the kid tree" and I decided to try my hand at flocking my own tree this year. I walked into the local Dollar Tree {you all know how much I love that store!} and picked up all the supplies I needed for under $5. I think the end result is pretty spectacular! Keep reading to get the full tutorial on how to flock an artificial Christmas tree using supplies from the dollar store.

Contact Paper Used as Wallpaper DIY

Earlier this week, I showed you how I took contact paper that I bought at the dollar store, and used it as wallpaper to create a fresh new look in my master bedroom closet. I use the back of my master closet as my sewing space and was getting tired of looking at the visual clutter. I wanted a space that would inspire me to create and it just wasn't cutting it.

Joanna Gaines, Magnolia Market, Heirloom Rose, wallpaper, DIY

On a trip to Magnolia Market late last year, I saw a few rolls of wallpaper that I just loved. Imagine my surprise when I found something similar to this Joanna Gaines Heirloom Rose wallpaper that costs $40 a roll, for only $1 per roll. I just love the dollar store

I ended up using 18 rolls of contact paper, so for more than half of what one roll of the Joanna Gaines wallpaper cost, I was able to get a similar look for a fraction of the price! Plus, using contact paper as wallpaper is such a great short-term solution. It peels off easily and doesn't leave a trace, so if you are renting, this could be such a great solution for you to personalize your space. I'm going to show you how you can use contact paper as wallpaper and share my tips and tricks with you today.

Contact Paper Used as Wallpaper for a Sewing Closet Reveal

Redoing my master bedroom closet has been something on my to-do list since January. It was kind of an accident though. I happened to find some contact paper at my local Dollar store {you all know how much I love my Dollar Store!}, so I purchased ten rolls of it and it sat on the floor of my closet for months before I did anything with it. I had the idea in my head, I just didn't have the motivation for the execution. Please tell me I'm not the only one! One of my biggest regrets when we put built-in's in my master closet is that we didn't paint the walls before we installed them. I love love love my master bedroom closet and all the built-in drawers but the yellow walls that are in THE WHOLE house were starting to get to me. So, I decided to be a little unconventional. I took those rolls of contact paper and used them to wallpaper the walls of my closet.

No big reveal would be fun without a little peek at the before. We have lived in our home for over six years and my master closet has had the most transformations over time. When we toured the home, I fell in love with how big and spacious the closet was. Lucky for me, there is another closet that is in our master bedroom, so I don't have to share. All of our bedrooms were being filled up by kids, so I envisioned the back wall of my closet as my craft room/sewing space.

It's evolved over time. The shelves got filled up with baskets in an attempt at organization, then one long weekend, I took the kids on a trip and I came back to some built-in shelving in the back of the closet. It's been a great space for me to create. I leave my closet door open and on the other side of the door is our master bathroom. I stand by the sink and stare into the visual clutter at the end of my closet to my craft space and I knew it needed some attention. I'm so much happier with the space now and can't wait to show you the big reveal!

Dollar Store Succulent Wreath Tutorial

I am still crazy over the succulent trend. I remember as a kid we called them hens and chicks. Do people still do that? So, I was shopping at my local dollar store, as one does, and found a box full of succulents. I snatched them up because I had been eyeing them at my local craft store and at $4-5 each using them for a craft project of this size, was going to add up! I bought 19 of them because that's how many they had and was excited to get started on making a succulent wreath. It took me less than twenty minutes to whip this wreath up and I love the end result. I'm showing you how you can make your own today.

5 Ways to Save Money on Pumpkins

frugal living, budget, dave ramsey
Nothing says fall like pumpkins and pumpkin patches. I know my kids love to frequent a few of our local farms. They always have some of the best activities for those crisp fall days. Who doesn't love to get lost in a corn maze or take a hay ride through the fields, but when it comes time to leave, do you pick up a wheel barrow and wander through the mushy fields to pick overpriced pumpkins from the farm? We don't! Today, I'm giving you a pass and sharing with you how you can save money on pumpkins for the whole family {even you mom, so you can decorate the mantel and the front porch!} but still enjoy family time at the local pumpkin patch and farms.

How to Make your Own Drop Cloth Banner

How to Make your Own Drop Cloth Banner

I'm always on the look out for easy to make projects that don't cost a whole lot of money to create. I picked up an inexpensive drop cloth from our local Home Depot with the idea of making a banner months ago. I just hadn't gotten around to it until I found a sign hanger at our local dollar store. You all know how much I love the dollar store and finding that hanger was the kick in the pants I needed to get creative and get sewing!

I'm so glad I did, because I love how it turned out. I created a few banners and the drop cloth is large enough to make many more banners for any season or occasion. Each banner took me about ten minutes to make. It's a project that is easy to tackle during nap time.

19 Things You Should Always Buy at the Dollar Store or Else You Will Pay Too Much

19 Things You Should Always Buy at the Dollar Store or else you will pay too much

About four years ago, I wrote a post that took me about 20 minutes. It is shocking to me, because that post went viral and still remains my top post week after week on my blog. It seemed to strike a chord with my readers. I once had someone ask me why I wrote that post. He said why does it matter what you should buy at the dollar store? It's only a buck. Who cares?

Who Cares? It's Only a Dollar!

You all seem to care! It seems like even though it's only a buck, we don't want to waste our money on things that break, are sub par or just don't work. Over the years I've become a sort of dollar store expert. People are constantly asking me if the dollar store has this or that and they want my opinion.

It's been a few years since that first post, but I still frequently shop at our local Dollar Tree.  I can't tell you how many times I am shopping the aisles at the dollar store and hear people say, man, I didn't know they had that. I should have looked here first! I keep a running list of those things that I know I can find at the dollar store that will help me from wishing I hadn't spent more on them somewhere else and now, I've compiled them for you!
19 things that you should always buy at the dollar store, or else you will pay too much!

Through the years, I have found these 19 things to be things that you should always buy at the dollar store. If you pick up these items anywhere else you will be paying too much.

What not to buy at the Dollar Store

What Not to Buy at the Dollar Store

I live way too close to The Dollar Store
I end up spending a lot of time there
Which means I also tend to spend a lot of money there too.
I've bought a few things that have been worth a dollar.
And I've bought a few things that are totally not worth a dollar.

So stroll with me through the aisles and I will tell you all those things you should buy
and all those things you should avoid.

Tissue Paper-Buy it at the Dollar Store

It's so much cheaper at The Dollar Store and works great in those
recycled gift bags we all have laying around.

Scotch Tape-Buy it at the Dollar Store

Is it just me or does your house go through tape like it's going out of style?

Thumb Tacks-Buy it at the Dollar Store

You probably don't need these every day, but I did do a project recently and wish I knew they had them at The Dollar Store because I paid too much.

Furniture Polish and Window Cleaner: Buy it at the Dollar Tree

Both things I use often, both things worth picking up
Windex does not corner the market on window cleaner and Pledge doesn't either

Estracell sponges-DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

While they may look like the scotch brite sponges, they are not the same.
Don't waste your money buy these instead.  You will be glad that you did!

Sun dishwashing liquid: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

This stuff is so watered down that it's cheaper to buy the name brand
Dawn makes a far more superior product and you can use it for more than just dishes.

Stor-it sandwich bags: Buy it at the Dollar Store

We don't use a lot of these baggies (I use my reusable ones instead)
but when I do need them, they do the job

Potted Meat: DO NOT BUY IT EVER

I'm pretty sure potted meat is never a good idea
also, any "meat" at The Dollar Store-gross!

Pretzels: Buy it at the Dollar Store

These are great for lunches and so much cheaper than at the grocery store

Kids Shampoo: Buy it a the Dollar Store

If you have kids that wash themselves you know how much shampoo you go through.

Shower Curtain: Buy it at the Dollar Store

Now I'm not saying you should use just this shower curtain in your bathroom,
but under your fancy shower curtain, this one for $1 is perfect.

Washcloths and Towels: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

So thin and so not worth it
These washcloths are about the same price and are far superior.

Extra Healing Lotion: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

It may look like Vaseline's healing lotion, but it is not even close.
Find a sale and buy the real deal
This is my favorite hand lotion right now.

Bobby pins: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

Honestly, didn't know anyone could screw up bobby pins
but they did.
Don't bother
These don't cost much more and work far better in my opinion.

Cotton Swabs: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

These guys bend before you even stick 'em in your ear.
It's like they are scared or something.

Pregnancy Test: Buy it at the Dollar Store

Who knew?
Seriously, the best $1 deal in the store
Compare them with other brands here
**updated**see this follow up post Should you Buy a Dollar Store Pregnancy Test

My daughter loves the Crayola twistables instead.

Crayons: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

There is something to be said for Crayola.  They have crayons figured out.
These are just waxy and yuck.
Crayola crayons are cheaper than the 8 or 10 in this pack and are far better!

Dough Pate: DO NOT BUY IT at the Dollar Store

It's called Pate...seriously...skip it.
It's not play doh
and yes, I do know that Pate is a French word for paste or dough.
It's still not the same

Bubbles: Buy it at the Dollar Store

I buy these by the armful during the summer
Cheap, big and full of fun

Halloween crows

Halloween Crows with Supplies from the Dollar Store

Welcome back to Halloween craft week at Holy Craft.
I've been sharing a few of my favorite crafts that I have worked on from this season.

The first in the series was this birch candle holder made from a decorative pumpkin.

Then I showed you these glass knob pumpkins

Today, I am showing you my gussied up crows.
I love the crows that you can buy at the Dollar store.
I usually pick up a whole handful of them.
This year, I decided to dress them up a bit.

I used this template for their book page witches hat.
Once the hat was cut out and glued, I used black crepe paper to embellish the hat.
I ruffled the crepe paper collar by using a needle and thread.
I simply pulled the needle and thread through the two pieces of crepe paper and pushed the crepe paper in a ruffle.
I cut a small x in the bottom of the hat and used hot glue to glue the hat to the crow.
I glued the two ends of the collar around the crow's neck.

He makes a nice addition to my book page wreath don't you think?

Check back tomorrow for our final craft
{a tutorial}
in the Holy Craft Halloween craft series.

What not to buy from the Dollar Store from the archives

All this week, I will be pulling out some of my favorite old posts from my Holy Craft archives.

This post on what not to buy from the Dollar Store is by far my most popular post.
It's funny because it wasn't something I put a lot of thought into, but it certainly struck a chord with my readers.
It's had nearly 3 MILLION page views.  The best part is reading the comments from other dollar store shoppers, so when you are done reading this post, head on over and read the comments.
