You are My Sunshine subway art

Every year, I do one craft bazaar and every year, I wonder why I do it.

I don't have one specific thing or group of things to sell. I just bring things that I like at the time. In the preparation for the bazaar, I am crazy busy...like sweat shop busy...making a few things to bring.

I saw a subway art sign with the words to "You Are My Sunshine" printed on it in a local shop and loved it. Mostly because I sang that song to each of my babes and it holds a special place in my heart.

So here is my version.

I live in a sort of industrial area with lots of factories and warehouses. Several of them have HUGE free boxes out front with lots of free wood. Usually it's hit or miss, but I found this piece a few weeks ago and thought it would be perfect for this project.

I also scored with some free paint too. I actually love this color (sort of a grey blue) from Sherwin Williams. Don't know the exact color but I sort of want to paint everything I own this shade.

I put two coats of it on the board and waited for it to dry.

Then I used my silhouette machine and cut out some vinyl letters. I used them like a stencil and painted over the whole thing with a muted white color (I mixed in some of the grey and added some water too).

Once I peeled up the letters, this is what I ended up with.

I really love how it turned out. I sort of hope it doesn't sell at the craft bazaar.

I love this. I wouldn't be able to sell it. It reminds me of all the million times my mom sang me the same song and now we both sing it to my son...

I would be sort of hoping the same thing if I made that sign. I sing that song to my boys every night and I seem to be in a little bit of a gray phase myself. I'm trying really hard not to pick ALL grays for our new house.

Aw Rachel, what a cute idea. Actually it brings a tear to my eye as when my hubby was dying, I would sit on his bed and sing this to him. I hope he heard me. Anyway, apart from that, this is good. Thanks for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris

I love how you did this! I'm totally stealing (err... I mean borrowing?) your idea! I sing this to my son every night. :)

I love this piece! I want to make something like it for my bedroom. I am envisioning some sort of gray subway art- like yours- but haven't come across any free wood and paint to make it happen yet! ;-)
